In 1966, the National Organization for Women (NOW) was formed to address issues affecting women (U184199 3). The sexual revolution was followed by the rise in feminism females became actively involved in civil rights movements and politics of the New Left. The rise in sexual freedom was curtailed with the onset of AIDS in the mid-1980s (U184199 3). The second feature of the movement was sexual politics where it encouraged people to embrace sexual diversity and freedom, this brought abortion and the use of contraceptives with it. In order to expand their human consciousness, the hippies embraced other practices, such as Yoga and meditation. Hippies were the largest and most conspicuous countercultural movement in the country and they were known for their lifestyle of sexual promiscuity and use of drugs and LSD (U184199 3). In 1965, the SDS supported the nationwide campaign of students (U184199 2). It was until the University of California Berkeley tried to control the political activities of its students in 1964 that the students widened the scope of their grievances to include anti-war protests (U184199 2). The term was coined to criticize features in the country’s political system, which was deemed inhibitory to the true spirit of democracy (U184199 1). BackgroundĬollege students formed the Student for a Democratic Society (SDS) in 1960 at the University of Michigan, as an organizational base for the country’s left-wing politics (U184199 1). A major and most remarkable event in the counterculture was the rejection of the widespread support that the government had for its involvement in the war with Vietnam(U184199 1). Men and women were the driving force behind the push and in order to demonstrate their different cultural views, they joined hands and separated themselves from the mainstream culture(U184199 1). In the 1960s, the counterculture movement was the most divisive movement for the US as the young people rejected social norms that were considered conventional (U184199 1).
